Kafka died a Czech citizen, but when he was born, in Prague, the city was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Czechoslovakia did not come into existence until the end of the first world war#Publication of The Trial was bedeviled by controversy over the order of chapters - Kafka had never numbered them. Academics have continued to dispute the correct running order#Many critics have argued that Kafka's social and philosophical attitudes derive from his personal circumstances. For example, he saw the onset of tuberculosis in 1917 as characteristic of a moral breakdown - a "general bankruptcy", as he said#Kafka's short stories are like scenes from nightmares. His story In The Penal Colony describes a torture machine in a prison to which convicts are bound while some unknown commandment is tattooed on their bodies. The prisoners always die of the procedure
